Every year, hundreds of thousands of people leave their homes in search of a better life. Many are injured or killed, while many more go missing. The U.N.’s International Organization for Migration's (IOM) Missing Migrants Project tracks incidents involving migrants, including refugees and asylum-seekers, who have died or gone missing in the process of migration towards an international destination. More than 34,200 migrants around the world have lost their lives since the project began in 2014. The Missing Migrants Project collaborates with various government and non-government entities to collect data, and also draws on media and other available sources of information. The data only reflects those incidents of which IOM is aware; thus these data are minimum estimates only.
